This section is used for all-NFL Sports Gab editions and/or small articles about the NFL. All NFL Sports Gab editions feature 3-8 articles about one specific NFL time. Look for a potential NFL preview (August), fantasy football (July), and playoff (December-January) edition. Additionally, NFL mock drafts, predictions, lists, and other small articles can be found here.
This year, seven men will be taking over the
headset – three for the first time, four making new stops in their coaching
journeys. Whatever the circumstances, there will be certain players benefitting
from each coaching change, and certain players who will lose value.
Coach: Todd Bowles
Former Job: Cardinals Defensive Coordinator
New Team: New York Jets
Coming from a defensive background, Bowles, along
with the addition of Darelle Revis, among others, will bolster a Jets defense
that was good last year, but could be great this year. While I think that
Bowles is one of the brightest coaching minds on the NFL horizon, this Jets
offense might be too weak for him to start carving his legacy this year. As
long as Ryan Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith are the quarterbacks, the offense will
mirror their respective mediocrities.
Biggest Beneficiary: Jets D/ST
Coach: Jack Del Rio
Former Job: Broncos Defensive Coordinator
Other Head Coaching Stints: Jaguars, 2003-2011
New Team: Oakland Raiders
Del Rio usually had a workhorse running back
during his time in Jacksonville, with both Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew
being great fantasy options during their primes with Del Rio. This could bode
well for Latavius Murray, who should receive the bulk of the carries in
Oakland. The Raiders defense may also improve, with Del Rio’s defensive
prowess, but I wouldn’t expect too much from anyone. This is the Raiders, after
all.
Biggest Beneficiary: Latavius Murray
Coach: John Fox
Former Job: Broncos Head Coach
Other Head Coaching Stints: Panthers, 2002-2010
New Team: Chicago Bears
Fox has no attachment to Jay Cutler, being from
Chicago’s previous regime, other than the fact that the Bears owe him enormous
amounts of money. To minimize Cutler’s turnovers, Fox will likely just take the
ball out of his hands, resorting to run game more often, which is good for Matt
Forte. If the combination of John Fox and new offensive coordinator Adam Gase
can’t help this Bears offense, then nobody really can.
Biggest Beneficiary: Matt Forte
Coach: Gary Kubiak
Former Job: Ravens Offensive Coordinator
Other Head Coaching Stints: Texans, 2006-2013
New Team: Denver Broncos
Kubiak is known for stretching the field and
asking his quarterbacks to be mobile, but with 39-year old Peyton Manning at
the helm, Kubiak is hoping to compensate for making Manning be mobile by asking
him to hand the ball off more often, which is good for CJ Anderson. Kubiak has
raved about the offensive line, which also bodes well for the Denver run game.
Biggest Beneficiary: CJ Anderson
Coach: Dan Quinn
Former Job: Seahawks Defensive Coordinator
New Team: Atlanta Falcons
Quinn is sure to shore up the defense, but the
real fantasy difference maker will be new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan,
who loves to use all of the field, draw up trick plays, and when he has a good
quarterback, sling the ball. This is all beneficial to Matt Ryan, but especially
Julio Jones
Biggest Beneficiary: Julio Jones
Coach: Rex Ryan
Former Job: Jets Head Coach (2009-2014)
New Team: Buffalo Bills
The Ryan hire was fantastic for a Bills
organization that desperately needed to inject some life into its
playoff-starved fan base. Ryan, and new offensive coordinator Greg Roman, from
San Francisco, both love to run the ball early and often, so LeSean McCoy has
to be happy about his move. With an uncertain quarterback situation, and with
neither Ryan nor Roman every having a quarterback finish above 21st
in passing yards, McCoy will definitely see a ton of work.
Biggest Beneficiary: LeSean McCoy
Coach: Jim Tomsula
Former Job: 49ers Defensive Line Coach
New Job: 49ers Head Coach
Tomsula, a defensive line cog, has now skipped the
coordinator step and been promoted right to head coach. What does this mean? It
means the same strategy as Jim Harbaugh
team, but without the correct personnel, coach personality, and football
genius. Does anyone stand to benefit?
